Publishing

Despite the hype and gloss put out by publishers the process of trying to get work published, even for established authors, is by no means all that it is cracked up to be. And that is with the 'reputable' Companies. So a word of warning: if you are thinking of submitting an article(s) or book(s) to a publishing house then make sure that you research the publisher thoroughly before submitting your work. Getting caught by a scam publisher is no fun. Publishing has become even more problematic with the spread of Open access which the University of Chicago Press describe as follows:

Open Access is a model of publishing and distributing scholarship online with no barriers to access for readers. With OA, the expense of publishing is generally not offset by sales or subscriptions, and other means to cover the initial and ongoing costs are necessary. To address this need, models to fund OA publishing have been developed to share the publication costs between a publisher and others, such as institutions, academic libraries, funders, and authors. With viable models for sustainably funding publications, OA can be one approach to publishing journal articles and books. https://press.uchicago.edu/resource/open_access.html

The Royal Society website has the following statement: "By opening up research to everyone, open access widens access to research, facilitates engagement, collaboration and understanding." https://royalsociety.org/journals/open-access/

But this begs the question as to who is really funding the publication? In reality Open Access is just another business model dreamed up by publishers working under extreme cost pressures. So before deciding upon a publisher make sure that you carry out your 'Due Diligence'. This is never wasted time.

'The Absolute Bottom of the Publishing Barrel' by Derek Lowe is worth a quick read even though it was written in October 2012 and the link to the Beall List, to which Lowe refers, is broken. If, however, you are interested then you can find the Beall List at https://beallslist.net/. A more up-to date page offering advice on submitting work for publishing is 'Resources for publishing: Predatory Publishing.' This can be found on the website of Nova Southeastern University of Florida (NSU) The information contained on the NSU page is taken from the 'Predatory Publishing' page on the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library at George Washington University. The Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library Research Guides are also well worth a read or two and can be found at https://guides.himmelfarb.gwu.edu/ where you will also find a mine of publishing related information. For example, did you know?

Since April 7, 2008, the [National Institute of Health] has required the Principal Investigator (or their delegate) deposit the full text of all journal articles arising from NIH funded research studies into the PubMed Central database.

From January 18, 2017 for NIH funded clinical trials involving U.S. Food and Drug Administration-regulated drug, biological and device products, the DHHS also requires the registration of the clinical trial on the clinicaltrials.gov database within 21 days of the enrollment of the first study participant, and that study population characteristics and summary results data be deposited in the clinicaltrials.gov database no later than 12 months after study completion.

The Royal Society website is also worth reading.

A list of Publishers interested in Psychology and Psychiatry

The following list is just that - a list of publishing houses. It is NOT a series of recommendations and the list is far from exhaustive. Furthermore, descriptions are in fact blurbs drawn from the publishers' own websites which often say more than they probably realise. My starting point was a web site by Hiten Vyas, '17 Top Publishers of Psychology Books'

Third Wave Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
"Third wave" cognitive behavioural therapies are a group of emerging approaches to psychotherapy that represent an evolution and extension of traditional cognitive behavioural treatment approaches. Third wave therapies prioritize the holistic promotion of psychological and behavioural processes associated with health and well-being over the reduction or elimination of psychological and emotional symptoms, although that typically is a "side-benefit."

After 16 years and nearly 2,500 posts, Advances in the History of Psychology is ending. This is sad news. My thanks to all those involved with the site and especially to Jacy Young. Over the years AHP has offered its readers a treasure trove of information and I am trusting that even if the site stops it will go into hibernation and therefore still remain alive so that all the information acquired and archived over those 16 years is not lost.
